On the first day, they started to demo the west patio, and also to dig a trench for the utility lines. The patio turned out to be a tougher demo than expected, as the patio was apparently poured of a piece with the slab, and was about 6 inches thick (3 inches is more typical for a plain concrete patio). It even seemed to have some deeper footings in parts, as if the original builder had expected to build the house out further, but changed their minds.
